Support Adaptive Riding with the Therapeutic Riding Center as a Side-Walker

Therapeutic Riding Center invites community members to "Join the Crew" at their Los Angeles location to support life-changing adaptive riding lessons. Volunteers in this role work under the direct guidance of PATH-certified instructors to assist riders with disabilities. The main responsibilities include acting as a side-walker—walking alongside the student to provide physical and emotional stability—or as a horse leader, ensuring the horse remains calm and steady throughout the lesson. By committing to a regular weekly shift during the Spring session, volunteers help students build confidence and develop a unique bond with their equine partners. They look for dedicated individuals who can handle a strenuous outdoor environment. Volunteers must be able to stand for at least one hour at a time and walk on uneven ground. While no prior horse experience is necessary, they require attendance at a mandatory monthly training session to ensure the safety and success of the students and horses. Join the Ranch Crew at a Hanaeleh Horse Rescue Community Work Day

Hanaeleh Horse Rescue opens their ranch to the public for large-scale maintenance and improvement projects designed to keep the facility safe and beautiful for the resident horses. These events are perfect for individuals or families who want to give back without a weekly commitment. Volunteers assist with various ranch chores, which may include painting, mending fences, or clearing brush. While they welcome volunteers of all ages, they suggest that children under 10 participate in private tours instead, as most work projects are better suited for older children and adults.

Commit to Animal Wellness with Hanaeleh Horse Rescue Weekly Horse Care

Hanaeleh Horse Rescue offers a structured program for dedicated individuals who can commit to one morning per week, Monday through Saturday. Volunteers in this program learn the essential "ins-and-outs" of running a horse rescue, including mucking out stalls, cleaning feed bins, and feeding the herd. This is a physically demanding role that requires the ability to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for four hours on uneven, inclined terrain. After completing four shifts, volunteers are paired with a "buddy" to begin learning how to handle the horses directly, ensuring a consistent and safe environment for the animals.

Organize a Service Project with Hanaeleh Horse Rescue for Your Community Group

Hanaeleh Horse Rescue welcomes school groups, Scouts, church organizations, and even specialized groups like Reiki practitioners to visit the ranch for service and learning. They typically schedule these larger groups to coincide with their public workdays, allowing teams to collaborate on significant service projects. For groups primarily interested in meeting the horses and seeing the facility rather than performing manual labor, they encourage scheduling a private tour to ensure a meaningful and educational experience for all participants.

Learn Horsemanship with the Therapeutic Riding Center through Barn Care

Therapeutic Riding Center rely on a team of "Barn Family" volunteers to maintain the health and happiness of their therapy horses. Beyond the lessons, volunteers serve the center by assisting with grooming the horses, cleaning tack, and ensuring the stalls and arena are kept in top condition. This hands-on work is essential for providing a safe and inviting space for both the animals and the students. As an added incentive, they offer a volunteer rewards program through the Equus Foundation, where participants can earn branded gear and even a riding lesson or trail ride after reaching specific hour milestones. Must be at least 14 years old

Sponsor An Animal at The Gentle Barn

At The Gentle Barn, they save the lives of animals who are too old, sick, scared, or injured to be adopted, and who would otherwise be euthanized. They give the animals sanctuary with us, and when they are ready, partner with them to help people suffering from the same stories of trauma, and connect people to the love and magic of animals. The Gentle Barn is host to foster agencies, drug and alcohol rehab centers, war veteran centers, domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, children’s hospitals, burn centers, and individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, and grief. The farm animals that reside at The Gentle Barn have all been rescued from severe abuse, neglect, abandonment or worse. They have been rehabilitated with traditional and non-traditional medicine, top quality nutrition, and countless hours in the arms of staff and volunteers. They have regained their trust in humankind by realizing that they are now loved, and their abuse is over. Because of their ongoing physical and psychological needs, they can't be adopted and are given sanctuary for the rest of their lives - and you can sponsor their journey. Revitalize the Ranch with The Milo Foundation at Sanctuary Work Weekends

The Milo Foundation invites volunteers to "roll up their sleeves" and assist with vital projects at their 283-acre Milo Sanctuary in Mendocino County. These weekend events are designed for those who enjoy physical work and want to support the 200+ animals—including dogs, cats, horses, and farm animals—who reside at the sanctuary for long-term rehabilitation. Volunteers help with building projects, general ranch maintenance, and clearing land to keep the sanctuary safe and functional. While the work can be hot and dirty, they ensure participants get plenty of "dog kisses and cat purrs" as a reward for their labor. It is a rewarding way to see the "sanctuary" side of rescue work and contribute to the quality of life for animals who need more time to find their special homes. Volunteers are encouraged to stay at the on-site volunteer cabin and contribute to a variety of critical ranch projects. Adults preferred; skilled teens allowed with supervision.
