At The Gentle Barn, they save the lives of animals who are too old, sick, scared, or injured to be adopted, and who would otherwise be euthanized. They give the animals sanctuary with us, and when they are ready, partner with them to help people suffering from the same stories of trauma, and connect people to the love and magic of animals. The Gentle Barn is host to foster agencies, drug and alcohol rehab centers, war veteran centers, domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, children’s hospitals, burn centers, and individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, and grief. The farm animals that reside at The Gentle Barn have all been rescued from severe abuse, neglect, abandonment or worse. They have been rehabilitated with traditional and non-traditional medicine, top quality nutrition, and countless hours in the arms of staff and volunteers. They have regained their trust in humankind by realizing that they are now loved, and their abuse is over. The Milo Foundation invites volunteers to "roll up their sleeves" and assist with vital projects at their 283-acre Milo Sanctuary in Mendocino County. These weekend events are designed for those who enjoy physical work and want to support the 200+ animals—including dogs, cats, horses, and farm animals—who reside at the sanctuary for long-term rehabilitation. Volunteers help with building projects, general ranch maintenance, and clearing land to keep the sanctuary safe and functional. While the work can be hot and dirty, they ensure participants get plenty of "dog kisses and cat purrs" as a reward for their labor. It is a rewarding way to see the "sanctuary" side of rescue work and contribute to the quality of life for animals who need more time to find their special homes. Volunteers are encouraged to stay at the on-site volunteer cabin and contribute to a variety of critical ranch projects. Adults preferred; skilled teens allowed with supervision.

Big Sunday invites volunteers of all abilities to join our weekly Accessible Wednesday morning program, AW@10, to support local animal rescue efforts. During this session, participants will work together to assemble "Kitty Kits" for feline residents in need at local nonprofit organizations. These activities are specifically designed to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring that everyone—including volunteers with developmental challenges—can participate in the joy of giving back. It is a wonderful opportunity to build community while providing essential supplies to help rescued cats thrive. Metered street parking is available, and a public parking garage is directly across from our building. This event offers a social, lighthearted environment where people can meet new neighbors, enjoy some laughs, and create tangible items that improve the quality of life for rescued dogs. California Doodle Rescue relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations to rescue and provide doodles with forever homes. Since their founding in 2022, they have rescued more than 2,800 doodles and secured permanent and loving homes for them. ​ Please consider making a tax-deductible donation.
